Meie juunikuisel kohtumisel vaatasime video “Risttuules”.
It’s always a treat to have one
of your sisters host an evening in where everyone can meet, enjoy great eats
and discuss a designated topic or two. Our June gathering reinforced what great
hospitality and friendship are all about – Thank you Marje. The extra distance
I travelled was worth every mile.
The pot
luck approach really helped everyone be part of the evening, and the
historically motivated film “Risttuules”/ “In the Crosswind” directed by Martti
Helde, presented a striking cinematic representation of one woman’s story of
deportation to Siberia and survival.
The
story, heartfelt and somber, was sown together through a series of stills (of
living breathing actors) posed ever so purposefully in a living environment. Watching
each scene while the actors barely moving but the wind blowing leaves, dust and
snow around them seemed to suggest a depth that would not have been captured by
showing photos alone. To me the verisimilitude achieved through the art-house
medium presented raw emotion, truth, history and cinematic beauty in every
scene.
In the
group discussion that followed the storyline was found to be more emphatic than
an action video. The story also resonated
as it reminded our group of family members who had been deported and the
influence it has had in shaping our lives today.
Variety
magazine has a good review about the live-action with living tableaux
experience used in the film click here to read it.
The
trailer to the film is available on You Tube and you can click here to watch it now.
